March's Meeting Minutes
Respectfully Submitted by Jeff Dinius, Secretary

The meeting was called to order by Mike Bond.

Visitors:

Tim Cole, who presented the program

Chuck Holms focused on aviation history and has one of the largest collection of autographs by aviation personalities.

On the Spot: Steve McClintock- has been a member of this chapter for 13 years and flies a 1960 Cessna 210. He has a tree service that he is shutting down as his family is having some health problems so he is commuting to Illinois (part of a week in Colorado and the rest of the time in Illinois) every month. He is looking for something faster than his 210 but needs to haul several people each trip so a speedy 2 place will not work.

Steve was looking on the web and found a new engine design that he is excited about investigating. He has talked to the builder/designer and is considering a trip to California to investigate in person. It is light, powerful, and fuel efficient. He is thinking it might be a good fit for aviation. Time will tell.

Treasurer’s Report: Ernie Stevens gave an accounting of our current financials but had a few members renew so the numbers were not totally accurate. For a current balance, contact Ernie.

Young Eagles Update: Leslie Thompson reminded everyone of the upcoming rally on April 4th with a backup date of April 11th. She has 24 students to be flown. Leslie feels she is well staffed for pilots (6) but would like more ground crew. Please contact Leslie if you are able to provide ground support services on the 4th and/or the 11th. We will be using the Allegiant Air facilities for the staging area.

Announcements:

  • 7 IFR training tapes were donated to the chapter. They will be handled like the tools in that the person that has them currently will store them until the next person wants them. The current holder of the tapes is Steve McClintock.

  • Dale Matuska mentioned an airline pilot that lives between Loveland and Denver along I-25. He was in poor health with throat cancer but seems to be doing much better and is thinking about flying again this year. He has a green Yak 3 WWII fighter that he races at Reno and also flies to some local events.

  • Dave Biesemeier has a David Clark headset he would like to sell. It has been used little as it was his “passenger” headset but no one flies with him anymore so he would like to have someone else put it to good use. It is a non-ANR type. Dave would like to get $175 out of it. Contact Dave for more details.

  • Baron now has a hanger behind his house. He is working on his runway. It will be 1200’ long on basically a E-W heading. He is located in the Owl Canyon area. His is the only “green” house in the area. Fly over and take a look.

Old Business: The stove has been moved. Its future is being decided with the possible disposition via Craig’s list or eBay for local pick up only. It is too heavy to ship.

Program: Tim Cole was introduced by Tom Barlow. Tom had met Tim and they found a topic that would make a good program for the chapter.

Tim began in aviation at 21. He was given a draft notice by the US government and decided to join the air force as a way to gain some control over his destiny. He became a rotor wing tech inspector and did a tour of duty in Vietnam. When he exited the air force he got his A&P and continued working on rotor wing aircraft.

In 1977 Tim was selling aviation insurance. He worked with several record setting balloon groups and finally met Steve Fossett. Tim worked with Steve on several record attempts and also the successful round the world solo trip.
Tim spoke of the record attempt and the logistics and engineering required for this attempt to be successful.

Tim had a video that was shown as well.
