October's Meeting Minutes
Respectfully Submitted by Jeff Dinius, Secretary

The meeting was called to order by Mike Bond.

There was some technical difficulty with laptops and display so while that was being resolved Dale Matuska told of his experience taking and passing his formation flying exam along with his flour bombing competition. Dale is now a full fledged formation pilot and has the certification to also perform on a military base.

Dale and his wife won the flour bombing competition they entered. Tina received a special certificate for her accurate releasing of the flour “bomb” when commanded by Dale. True team work by this husband and wife team.

Visitors: Rena Smith and her husband. Rena is an A&P with IA for Century helicopter. They moved to Colorado from Helena, MT to be near grand children. Rena has worked on single-engined Cessnas and is volunteering to help others as she wants some experience on homebuilts. Her contact information is being passed to the appropriate persons to get it put on the web site.

On the Spot: Tom Barlow – Tom is from North East Wyoming and started flying when he was about 18. Tom had been in line to receive a naval commission but bad eyes kept him from serving. As with most people that start young, his flying took a back seat to college/career/wife/family. Tom’s career got him into the Oil industry where one of his employers had a 210 that he used to commute from home to his work site.

When the oil industry took a down turn in 1986, Tom left and worked on other things in the Fort Collins area. He got back into the Oil industry until it went bust again
Tom restarted about 6 years ago by getting his instrument in one of the 10 day programs.  Tom is also the owner of a Piper Warrior.

Hanger flying story: Tom was taking a ride in a T-34 as part of his pre-naval experiences. He performed a loop and with the airplane pointed straight at the ground, he pulled a little aggressively and found an airplane will stall even if it has a lot of airspeed if the pull is hard enough. The instructor got helped him recognize a high speed stall and corrected the problem.

Treasurer’s report: Ernie reports we have gained a little income as someone paid some dues. Contact Ernie for the complete report if you are interested.

Young Eagles: Leslie reported on the latest young eagles event held on Oct 4th 2008. There were 26 young eagles flown along with 3 under aged children and several parents.
12 have signed up for the next rally.

Leslie wanted to thank the pilots: Dave Nabors, Mike Bond, Sue Wolber, and Mel Callen.
Leslie also wanted to thank the ground crew: Derek Johnson, Terry Thompson, Baren Buschmann, and some CAP pilots with a CAP airplane. Since there was no ground school this time the CAP filled in with some tours of their plane to keep people occupied while awaiting their flights.

The suggestions for the next rally are to continue to coordinate with Allegiant Air for the use of their module.
The CAP helped a lot and they want to be more involved but we want to insure the rally stays focused on young eagle flights.
We need to set policies regarding under aged children and parents.

The discussion ended with a recommendation to chat with the parents and if the child is ready to learn from this experience, then they can be taken. Also some time would be taken with the child to determine if they would feel better with a parent on board. We would stick to the 8-17 year old range.

There was also a comment to include the CAP if they wish to help with ground control of people for safety sake. One child proved there were some holes in our current safety procedures with respect to crowd control.

Announcements: Platte Valley has a BBQ and fall fly in. No details were known at the time of the meeting.

A builder’s workshop and forum will be held in Longmont. Dates and times also unknown.

Old Business: We need a nominating committee to provide candidates for elections in November. Dave Biesemeier volunteered to be on the committee as he was told he would not be nominated for a position if he was on the committee. Two other members are needed to round out the committee.

Program: Stan Specht told of his trips to Alaska. The last being in his Kitfox with three other Kitfoxes. .

Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (TAF) Changes

Beginning November 5th, the TAF format will change. The National Weather Service will change the time formatting to conform with ICAO standards.

EAA 515 Member Biographies
From Baren Buschmann

Aviators:

Well after a long delay, I'm finally getting to the project I volunteered for, a short biography of the members. My name is Baren (EAA127531) I joined chapter 515 a few months back. My project is to contact ya'll and get some insight as to who and what we have in the chapter.

Too many times when we get together we talk to just a couple of people and go home, partly because we don't know who's who and what they are doing or if they have any talents that could be of help or where they even hale from.......sooooo I need everyone to help by participating (if you would be so kind). The results will be posted for all at the chapter and for new people that may grace our presence, it is a way we can rekindle that feeling of camaraderie and friendship that aviation is known for and a lot of us grew up with, but has seemed to have waned in resent years because of busy life styles.

Anyway here goes, after I get the results back, at some point I would like to take pictures of the respective individuals with their aircraft or project or dream. If you don't have any of those, that's OK, your smilin kisser will be just fine.

By the way if you haven't been to a meeting lately, how come? we'd love to have your input and presence.
We'd love to see the chapter grow and and be an activity we could ALL par-take in and enjoy.

  1. Your name?
  2. Where do you live?
  3. Native?
  4. Your e-mail?
  5. When did you become a chapter member?
  6. Are you a member of the national organization?
  7. How long have you been flying?
  8. What aircraft did you learn in/solo?
  9. What or who inspired you to aviation?
  10. Married?
  11. Last time you went to Oshkosh?
  12. Do you have an aircraft, project or plan, or dream?
  13. What would be really cool if it happened involving our chapter?
  14. Your best building talent is?
  15. What could you use some more expertise in?
  16. What would you love to learn how to do?
  17. Your most memorable aviation experience?

Add anything you like.

Thanx.......Baren
