June's Meeting Minutes
Respectfully Submitted by Jeff Dinius, Secretary

The meeting was called to order by VP Dave Nabors.

Visitor: Lyle Cox – He is looking to start a Sport Pilot school on the Loveland Fort Collins airport. The name of his company is Fun Aero Sports. Lyle is trying to find an aircraft to use for instruction. He had looked at the Zenith Zodiac and had a line on a used aircraft but that fell through. He is currently considering a Sport Cruiser. Lyle provided a lot of his reasoning for pursuing this activity and the aircraft he is considering. Lyle’s progress can be tracked at www.funaerosports.com or via email at LyleCox@funaerosports.com.

Treasurer’s report: Ernie Stevens was not present so a treasurer’s report was not available..

Young Eagles report: There was no Young Eagles report given.

Announcements

  • Steve Samples flew his Sonex. No problems or issues reported.

  • Dale Matuska flew a couple formation flights for graduation ceremonies this past month. Parents had requested the flights for their students and all enjoyed the show.

  • There will not be a Rocky Mountain Regional Fly-in this year. The committee was not able to make the appropriate arrangements in time to have the event this year. This is the last year of the current agreement between the Fly-in organizers and Front Range airport. The organizers will be looking at other venues and hope to have an agreement in place to allow a fly-in next year.

  • There is an organization devoted to WWII vets that hope to have some sort of air show this summer. Rumors mentioned something fairly large at Front Range if the arrangement can be completed.

  • Reminder of the July 4th display of the Collings Foundation aircraft at the Loveland Fort Collins airport. The Foundation will have a P51 in attendance this year along with the B17, B24, and B25 from last year. There has not been any word about other static display aircraft but exhibition flying has been prohibited.

  • Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport (Jeffco) will hold an open house the on June 7th. This will be in conjunction with the EAA B-17 Sentimental Journey providing rides and tours.

  • The owner of the deHavilland Venom Jet crashed during a fly by at the PlatteValley airport. The engine flamed out and there was not time for a restart. The pilot put the aircraft into a near by field but landed with the irrigation ditches running across his flight path. The landing gear was ripped out and the aircraft caught fire. The pilot was unharmed but the aircraft had major damage

  • On the topic of Platte Valley, Dale reported the museum had moved to the opposite end of the airport and has two new building complete and are building a third. The museum now has an extensive collection of WWII uniforms from both allied and axis air powers. They have also gotten all their WWI aircraft in flying condition. The new building is to house a restaurant and a pilot’s bar. The Gate’s company is funding this museum expansion

There was no program for this month as efforts to juggle other programs into this empty slot failed. This allowed time for some lively discussions and general hanger flying.
