March Meeting Minutes
Respectfully Submitted by Jeff Dinius, Secretary

The meeting was called to order by Mike Bond.

Visitor: Walt Smith is an EAA national member and decided to check out the local chapter. He is a fairly new Private pilot working toward an instrument rating. He has not decided to build anything yet but we can probably change that.

Treasurer’s Report: Ernie reported the amount in the treasury when he left home but he had to issue a couple checks for expenses incurred.. Details of the finances are available to paid members from Ernie Stevens.

Young Eagles: Leslie was present and a discussion about a spring event followed. Leslie has about 24 students signed up for the event. 15 of them will come from her Aviation Club run by Leslie and her husband. The remainder was left over from the last event.

Location was next on the agenda. Leslie did some checking with the Jet Center. They were receptive until the topic of restroom use came up. This may still be a possibility. Leslie then checked with Allegiant Air. They mentioned they do not have any flights on Saturday from March 29th until May 15th. Their modular rooms would be available for a fee of $50. They also mentioned they may drop the fee for a non-profit. All felt this was a great location as it provided ample parking and a location for the students to view airplanes and not be in any airport traffic. A motion was made to spend the $50 if necessary to secure this location. The motion carried.

A discussion of ground school arose with the commitment to contact Glenn to see if he would present the school again. Several members offered to help with the school/ground support.

Leslie mentioned purchasing the Aircraft Trading Cards to provide each student. Acquiring balsa gliders from DOT was mentioned and seemed to be the direction with a few packs of trading cards purchased to supplement the gliders.

Another suggestion was to have members bring old magazines to distribute to the students. A request for old magazines was made.

Snacks and water were mentioned. Several stories of aircraft interiors being decorated with stomach contents followed with the plan for snacks being dropped in favor or water only.

The final topic was pilots which lead directly to a discussion of dates. The primary date is set for April 19th 2008 with the backup date set for April 26th, 2008. Leslie reminded the pilots they were required to be current paid members of the chapter for the insurance to cover their flight activities and for the students to be entered into the national log book.

Tool Committee: Dale brought in a couple boxes at the beginning of the meeting. Some of the tools had arrived. During the break, the boxes were opened and many of the tools examined. Dale is acting as the current keeper of the tools until they all arrive and he has an opportunity to inventory and prepare the use documents. More tools and details will follow.

Announcements:

  • Ernie Stevens brought the remaining patches to the meeting with the desire of not taking them home after the meeting. Some were still left.

  • Dale announced a 1967 Mooney that was for sale in Greeley. Dale sold his One Design to the Mooney owner so now there is another aircraft for sale. Dale did not have a lot of details except the Mooney had just completed its annual and had over $10,000 worth of panel upgrades. If you are interested, contact Dale Matuska for more details.

  • Dave Nabors mentioned another use for old magazines was to take a few to doctor’s offices. Many may appreciate reading something other than the usual collection of material in these offices.

  • An Aviation Rodeo scheduled for September 22nd. The chapter was asked if they would be interested in manning a booth during the event. Further discussion was tabled until the event is a little nearer.

  • Along the lines of advertising the chapter, a discussion followed. The general consensus is that the chapter does advertise by being on the national web site (Walt Smith confirmed that was the tool he used to find the chapter).  Many felt more local efforts were needed. Several good ideas were kicked around. Mike Bond gave everyone homework for the next meeting. All members are to think about ways to get the chapter in front of the flying public. No actual activity need take place, just think about what could be done and bring it to the next meeting for discussion. If you cannot attend the next meeting email the idea to Mike Bond or any other officer and it will be included.

  • A thank you card was circulated from the family of Nels Rennerfeldt thanking the chapter for the flowers sent to the funeral.

Evening Program:

Mike Bond had collected several aviation related videos from the web and his personal archive. Most videos focused on landings. Some of the most spectacular were cross wind landings by commercial aircraft. Some were handled well, some were not so good, and some displayed some excellent pilot decision making (they went around to try again). Mike also showed some video of his approaches and landings in Idaho (Mike, you call those “runways”?). There were some extreme aircraft from Alaska as well as some “difficult” approaches and runways.

The program was very good. Thanks to Mike for providing a program on short notice.

We need programs for the next meeting. You need not present the program, just provide the idea.

Two Partners Wanted: RANS S6S TW with Rotax 912S 100hp Engine
Submitted by George McLaughlin

I'm a EAA member and have built 6 and helped others build their RANS airplanes. I currently own an S6S tail wheel airplane and am looking for 2 partners to offset ownership costs.

Details

  • Great Flying Airplane with 100 hours
  • Qualifies for Light Sport
  • Garmin 296 GPS - Panel Mounted
  • Encoding Transponder
  • Strobe and Legal lights
  • Com Radio, Engine monitor, VSI, DC Headsets, Intercom, and all necessary instruments.

There will be a total of three partners (including myself). I am the builder and holder of the repairman certificate.

The plane is currently hangered at Easton Valley View Airport in Lasalle CO, but I am willing to move it.

Partners should hold a current Private Pilot or Light Sport Pilot with some hours to keep insurance costs down or pay difference in costs.
