Program Formation Flying

December Meeting Minutes
Respectfully Submitted by Jeff Dinius, Secretary

Mike Bond called the meeting to order.

The meeting was held a week early to accommodate our guest speaker’s schedule.

Guest: David Monk visited the chapter. He is new to the area and is building an RV7. He has the tail completed and is working on a wing. He has not determined if it will be an A or not. Mike Bond was interested in his progress as he is interested in building an RV7 also.

Formation Flying: Dale Matuska circulated a couple pictures of himself and some other YAK drivers in formation flight. Dale will be presenting a program on his experiences learning formation flight. The pictures were provided to build interest.

Treasurer's Report: Ernie Stevens was not present so there was no treasurer’s report.

Young Eagles Report: Lesley Thompson did not have any new activity to report. Lesley did mention there were some individuals interested in becoming Young Eagles and would appreciate any pilots interested in providing rides outside of an event to contact her. Mike Bond offered to take an individual in the near future.

Announcements

  • Hugh Beckham talked to Dean Hall this past week. Dean said he is “in as good shape as can be expected”. He managed to walk for 10 minutes and was as exhausted as if he had accomplished a full day’s work. He is making progress and has a positive attitude.

  • Van’s Aircraft newsletter, The RVator, will become a web based publication in the near future. This will eliminate the need for a subscription. A dedicated link was not known but a link from the home page was anticipated. (I checked the home page for Van’s and found mention of the newsletter being free in 2008 along with a link to click.)

  • The next chapter meeting would fall on the 1st of January. Mike made some comment about most members probably not wanting to attend with a “hang over” so the meeting date was moved to the 8th of January.

Old Business

  •  Name Tags: Mike circulated a paper to allow people without name tags to put the spelling they would like placed on their name tag. The chapter had decided to provide everyone member with a name tag and this was the next step in the process. People with name tags will not be receiving new one. This is an effort to bring everyone up to the same level.

  • Tools: Dale Matuska received a flier from ATS tool company. ATS listed an “engine” tool kit that included most of the common tools necessary to inspect and diagnose an engine. They also listed an “ignition” kit to inspect and diagnose the ignition system of an aircraft. Dale proposed the chapter purchase these two kits along with an oil filter cutter. The motion was made to purchase these items and without further discussion the motion carried. Dale offered to store the kits and to provide instruction in their use. The instruction could become a meeting program if there is enough interest. There was mention of rules for gaining access to Dale’s hanger and comments as to why the rules were put in place. (You had to attend the meeting to appreciate the rules and reasons.)

  • Stoves: Bob Van Dalsem mentioned that the chapter owns 2 cook stoves. He also mentioned they were stored in his hanger and he would REALLY like to have them removed. Seems Chapter 43 is interested in taking ownership of the stoves. A motion was made to donate the stoves to Chapter 43 with the stipulation that they provide all Chapter 515 members with a free breakfast the first time they use the stoves. The motion passed and Bob will be in contact with Chapter 43 members to transfer the stoves, VERY SOON.

New Business: No new business was discussed.

Evening Program

John Duck of the Brooklands Museum in England provide a history of the airfield/race track. John mentioned he and his father and grandfather had all been in aviation. Between the three they had 100 years of experience. John provided a narrative supplemented with some very nice pictures.

The area where the museum is located was the home to many aviation companies with all either having moved away or gone out of business. The last company (Vickers) left in 1988 to make room for offices. The museum was begun to preserve the history and events that have taken place at the Brooklands.

Amending Operating Limitations
Tom Gierhart, EAA 825874

Fellow EAA members,

Amateur-Built aircraft certificated in the past were issued Operating Limitations that prohibited flying over densely populated areas except for takeoffs and landings. FAA order (8130.2) has been revised and the new Limitations read as follows:

“This aircraft is prohibited from operating in congested airways or over densely populated areas unless directed by air traffic control, or unless sufficient altitude is maintained to effect a safe emergency landing in the event of a power unit failure, without hazard to persons or property on the ground.”

If you would like to amend your old Operating Limitations, by mail, to the newer Limitations and be legal flying over populated areas, please call, email, or Fax me (see numbers below).

Thanks, Tom
