September Meeting Minutes
Respectfully Submitted by Jeff Dinius, Secretary

The meeting was called to order by Mike Bond at Mel Callen’s shop/hanger.

Visitors/New Members:
Ron Starks is a United pilot and has flown one of only two Radial Rockets in the US. He is trying to decide what to build but wants something different. He is leaning toward a Radial Rocket but has also flown the Lancair.

Jim Crowder is a renewing member after a year + absence. He brought his son Mark Crowder to the meeting as a new member. Mark has a military pilot background and currently flies for United Airlines. Mark is currently building an RV-8.

Treasurer’s report:
Ernie Stevens was not present so there was no treasurer’s report.

Young Eagles:
Lesley has 30 kids lined up for YE flights on our September 15th rally. She has 5 pilots lined up but would appreciate any others that would care to fly. Lesley also has a couple of ground people but really needs some additional help on the ground.

Glenn Hetchler offered an idea. Glenn has been involved with YE in California and lead a mini-ground school while the kids awaited their flight. Glenn has offered to do the same at this event but would like a location inside and away from aircraft to perform this ground school. Mike has agreed to check with the Eagle Hanger folks to see if we could use a room inside their hanger. Dave Nabors offered his hanger as an alternative.

There were also comments about snacks and drinks (water and not soft drinks) for the kids and volunteers.

Programs for the remainder of the year:
Programs are still needed for October and December. Dave Nabors mentioned a fire fighter is interested in providing a program. Dave was going to check to see what would work for him.

There was also mention of having Aero Graphics do a presentation. There was concern that this was a commercial operation so the program content would need to be controlled. More details were needed before this could be decided.

Old Business:
Tool Box: Dale was tied up this month and did not have time to get to it.

Nominating Committee: There were no volunteers so names of all present were placed in a container and three names were drawn. The nominating committee members are:

  • Hugh Beckham
  • Mel Bickling
  • Dave Biesemeier
When these gentlemen call, consider serving the chapter.

Program for the evening:
Mel Callen has his Giles G202 about ready for primer paint. Mel did a nice job of explaining the history of this particular aircraft and how he came to own the partially completed kit. The aircraft is a two place version of the G200. It is an unlimited aerobatic aircraft made mostly of carbon fiber.

This is Mel’s 4th homebuilt and his craftsmanship really shows in this aircraft..

Joke of the Month
Submitted by Hugh Beckham

This little story might help you decide if that last little bit of budgeted money should go for an airplane part or something for the house.

Years ago I got a call from a homebuilding buddy and fellow M.G.-T.C owner one Saturday morning with a plea to bring some adult beverages and come over now so that he could cry on my shoulder. I found him in the garage with his M.G.-T.C. partially disassembled and surrounded by a bunch of Pitts S1 wooden parts. He showed me some dry wood powder in the back of his M.G. as he cried, "look, termites!" About that time a truck from a termite service that he had called drove up. The inspector glanced in the back of the M.G. and then looked up at the open garage door. He poked at the door and more wood powder fell into the M.G. Then he said, "look, here are your termites."

My friend then said, "oh, thank God, they are only in the house."
