February Meeting Minutes
Respectfully Submitted by Jeff Dinius, Secretary

The meeting was called to order by president Mike Bond.

Pat Travis attended as a guest and made the announcement that he had purchased Chris Bolton's hanger and KIS Cruiser project. The KIS would be for sale soon.

Ernie Stevens gave the treasurer's report. The chapter has $2297.39 in the bank.

Young Eagles report: Young Eagles day is June 9th which turns out to be the same day as the Stearman FlyIn. Chapter Young Eagles day is scheduled for April 28th with an alternate of May 5th.

Leslie and Terry Thompson with CDOT teaches a Jr.High aviation class and would like her group flown. Pilots are needed so contact Mike Bond if you can help.

July 4th is the open house at FNL. The chapter might do some Young Eagle event at the open house.

Chris Bolton is also selling his Long EZ but did not have a price. Chris is selling the plane with a fresh annual and reworked prop. He had not settled on a price so see Chris for details.

Old Business

The chapter thanked Glenn and Edna Hetchler for taking the newsletter. Glenn and Edna gave a summary of the web site situation and what they planned for the future. For now the newsletter is being emailed but will be up on the web again in a month or two.

Mike Bond brought up the subject of nametags and asked for help from Tom Barlow. Tom and Mike agreed to work out the details for the people without nametags. Ernie Stevens will provide the list of current paid members.

Chapter tools was the next topic. The current approach is for all members with loanable tools or having chapter tools need to let Mike Bond know and he will get the list to Edna for inclusion with the newsletter mailing until the web site is back up and running. Hugh Peckham mentioned he has the engine hoist and would like someone else to take possession. Hugh felt it better if someone closer to the airport had the hoist. The subject of non-members borrowing tools was addressed. The general consensus was that only "active" members should have access to the tools. A discussion of what is an "active" member followed with some general concepts but details to be finalized later. Mike Bond offered to compile a list and provide control. Condition of the tools are the responsibility of the last person with the tool.

The topic of new tools to purchase was next on the agenda. The hole cutter had been modified by a previous user rendering it useless. A motion to replace the hole cutter passed.

The topic of a projector for the meetings and some pneumatic riveting tools was discussed. Doug Dempsey and Dave Nabors agreed to gather some information and present it to the membership at a future meeting. Also suggested was a bore scope and spark plug cleaner. Other general maintenance items were also considered.

New Business

The April meeting will be held at the airport. Doug Dempsey asked if anyone had specific data they would like collected. The April topic concerns the data collected from an RV-6 that has been instrumented to collect flight data. The data collected changes per flight. Doug indicated there was a significant amount of data already collected and could be graphed for display.

The topic of nametag wearing incentive was deferred until everyone had a nametag.

Mike Bond polled the members present on interest in the topic of meteorology. Mike has been in touch with some channel 9 people and they would be interested in presenting a program on weather. One issue was timing as the channel 9 personnel work the evening TV broadcasts. Mike was going to work on details to make the program work for the chapter and the TV personalities.

The program schedule for March is uncertain. The person with the program had not responded to confirmation contacts. It was also mentioned June, August, October, and December are still open. The November program may be on the subject of soaring. If you have a topic you would like to see presented, let the officers know.

The last topic before the program concerned some members not receiving the emailed newsletter. If you have trouble receiving the newsletter, let an officer know. Make sure to include a good email address.

The program for the February meeting was presented by Harold Beckett. Harold is a retired captain for United Airlines and is a current member of the Colorado YakPack. Dale met Harold when the YakPack came to critique Dale's Yak 52. Dale had Harold do some work for him and found Harold has another hobby of building runable model engines. Harold presented 4 of these engines demonstrating different techniques and skills required to constructed the engines. These ranged from the forerunner of the Caterpillar engine, a 4 cylinder, inline water cooled gas engine to a 14 cylinder double radial engine. Harold ran these two engines and described the others he has built. Harold is available via email for those wishing additional information on this exciting hobby. He can be reached at yakflt@aol.com.

Wellington Airport Feasibility Study Update

Jane Peters (pilot and member of the feasibility study Steering Committee) will visit us and provide an update on the status of the Wellington Airport Feasibility Study. They have selected an engineering firm to perform the feasibility & business plan and have CDOT Division of Aeronautics on board to recommend that the FAA fund an airport in Northern Colorado in the near future (FAA could fund up to 95%). This is exciting news considering the recent closure of 3V5!
