Minutes:
EAA Chapter
meeting help on July 11th, 2006
The meeting was called to order by Tom Barlow.
Mention was made
that the next meeting would be held on our regular meeting date of the
first Tuesday of the month and this would be August 1st. The speaker for
this meeting will be Jon Johanson and he is being sponsored by Dean Hall.
The location had not been established as of the meeting time.
Visitors were welcomed. First up was Max Clapham. The second visitor was
Dan Berkram. Both of these gentlemen are located in the area and are interested
in meeting and talking with like minded folks.
The treasurer’s report indicated we have over $2100 in our account.
The chapter is in good financial shape.
There was no official Young Eagles activity but Mike Bond attended a flyin
that was giving Stearman rides for $60 per person. There were several
children that wanted rides but the price was just too much for the parents.
Mike over heard this and offered to provide rides. Mike flew about 10-12
kids but did not have any of the Young Eagles paperwork with him. He did
direct the parents to the EAA web site to get them signed up as Young
Eagles. Just proves you never know when an opportunity may arise to share
the magic of flight with someone. Good job Mike.
The 2007 chapter nominating committee is being put in place. Randy Nettleton
was the sole member at the time of the meeting. If you are interested
in being a part of this process, contact Tom Barlow or Randy Nettleton.
There were several announcements. Hugh Beckham got a crankshaft for his
re-engining project. Hugh pulled his original engine expecting a one month
engine swap but had problems with crankshafts. Several months later, he
sees the light at the end of the tunnel and is hoping it is not a train
coming his way. Good luck Hugh.
Kent Ferguson was wanting to get his Sport Pilot license but had not been
able to find anyone to provide instruction until he got to the good folks
at Platt Valley airport. Kent began instruction in an L16 (military Champ).
The prices are not too bad either. Instructor was quoted as $37 per hour
cash and $42 if you use other payment methods. The airplane rents for
$46 per hour wet. If you are interested in the Sport Pilot License, take
the drive over to Platt Valley airport. You can visit the WWI museum and
get some time in a Sport Pilot legal airplane.
There was also mention of Ken Aero also located at Platt Valley airport.
This business is some sort of a distributor for Aircraft Spruce. Hugh
gave him a plug as being very responsive to the needs of the home builder.
Glenn Hetchler gave a report of his trip moving his C170 from Santa Rosa,
CA airport to Longmont. It was a good trip with his son providing ground
support while driving Glenn’s pickup truck back to Colorado. During
the trip back Glenn’s son gave him some sort of meat stick which
he put in the airplane’s right seat. Glenn did not eat any of the
meat until he was safely on the ground. During the trip to DIA to put
his son on a commercial flight back to California, Glenn experienced the
effects of food poisoning. Glenn was VERY glad he did not consume any
of the meat in flight as he was unable to control his truck and had to
make a quick stop to provide quick relief. The moral of the story is be
certain what you are consuming before and during flight. It is much more
difficult to pull off the side off the side of the sky and relive yourself
of food poisoning.
Mike Bond is considering a Van’s RV of some sort but was asking
about room behind the seats for a dog that accompanies he and his wife
sometimes. The group provided several recommendations (leave wife at home
and put dog in right seat, RV-10 with more seats, etc). Others with more
experience in the RV line also offered useful suggestions so Mike has
more information to base his decision.
Mike Bond also mentioned he took a trip with a 396 with the weather feature.
This devise provided him good information. Mike decided to wait out a
storm based on what he observed on the 396.
The program for the night was provided by Jerry Stooksbury of Avionics
Specialists. Jerry provided a good presentation about Avionics for the
Experimental Aircraft. More information is available from Avionics Specialists
web site at www.avspec.com.
Jon Johanson
of Adelaide, Australia will be our speaker at the Aug 1 chapter meeting.
Our regular members of a few years or more will remember that he has been
our speaker a number of times in the past and has a wonderful story to
tell. For those who don't know, he is primarily notable in aviation for
being the only person to have flown the world solo three times, 1995 west
to east, 1996 east to west, and 2000 including the North Pole. In 2004,
he soloed the So. Pole and became the only pilot to have done both.
Among his numerous awards is the aviation world's highest award, The Gold
Medal from The Federation Aeronautique Internationale which he received
in 2004. He holds 51 FAI certified flight records.
More importantly, Jon Johanson is an all around personality, a multitalented,
modest, genuine human being. He first served an apprenticeship as a carpenter
after which he became a registered nurse and then a certified Mid-Wife,
both of which he has practiced extensively. He holds all the pilot ratings
through ATP. He has paid his dues to the world society by being a medical
volunteer in the war torn jungles of Southeast Asia for a year and a half.
And, he is a great speaker. We think that it will be a rewarding and enjoyable
program.
p.s. For those who are interested in more information, just google up
"Jon Johanson", and there will be plenty.
DH

The picture of
Jon in the yellow RV-8 was taken at FNL last August. Most of our members
were not aware that he was here because it was a short visit. He then
ferried the -8 from Calif. to Australia---just a routine short hop.

The other picture is of our two airplanes over Horsetooth in '96.
Do you know who has one of these in the Chapter??
Happy Landings -
