The two friends worked on the projects together and had a great time.
Bob T. finished his first and it made its only flight sometime in 1968. The first flight was a challenging one. The weight and balance on this airplane was calculated to need 22 lbs. in the tail so a steel plate was added to the tail. This was a math error that impacted the first flight. Some of the windshield supports were left out for better vision. this was the second mistake. The first flight was just around to pattern but after take off the windshield blew in and the airplane was badly out of trim. The landing approach took almost full power to pull the fuselage through the air with the covering opening up like a wind sock.
Back on the ground the airplane was tucked into the corner of the hanger and little was done to fly it again. Bob T. ran into a finacial bind and sold the airplane. Bob H. did not finish his but moved on to other aircraft that he rebuilt always wanting to come back to the Tailwind project. Both airplanes were in the hanger from 1968 to date.
I bought the Bob H. Tailwind because Bob was a good friend of my dad. I would like to see these two Tailwind in flight together after their long rest together in the hanger.
Contact me for more information. I do not own this airplane but I'm helping the owner sell it and I would like someone to share ideas with as we both finish them.
